Compatibility issue with Windows 10 and AOL Beta

Hands over keypad

Q: I recently purchased an HP computer with Windows 10 and downloaded AOL Beta Version for it but I was not able to get AOL Beta to install on the machine. AOL reached a certain download completion percentage after I clicked on the file but then the download just disappeared. The program did not not seem to install, and I did not see an icon for it appear on my Desktop. Any ideas what to do?

A: This may be an issue with the version of AOL Beta being downloaded. According to research, AOL Beta versions 9.8 and 9.7 have some compatibility issues with Windows 10.

To fix, Microsoft suggests running the Windows-based “Program Compatibility Troubleshooter,” which will test the version installed on your system and see if it will work work under the Windows 10 environment or not.

To access this tool, click on the Cortana icon (the round circle next to the Start button) and type “Compatibility” into the search box — but don’t hit enter. After you finish typing, the top item listed in the search window should be the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Click on that to launch the tool and then follow the instructions on screen to see if the program in question will work on Windows 10 or not.

If the tool determines that your version of AOL Beta will not work with the version of Windows 10 installed on your computer, then upgrade your version of AOL Beta to one that will work on Windows 10.

On Aug. 30, AOL released the new AOL Desktop 11, which supersedes Beta versions 9.7 and 9.8 and is said to be a total re-write of AOL Beta that has been designed for Windows 10 compatibility. It can be downloaded via the following URL: beta.aol.com/projects/desktop/windows/

Before installing AOL Desktop 11, please make sure any and all other versions of AOL have been removed from your system. Don’t judge this by the icons present on your Desktop — rather, go into your Control Panel’s Programs and Features and remove any other versions of AOL Beta listed there. This ensures no other version of AOL Beta hinders installation, which may be another reason why installation has failed in the past.
