A Pennsylvania woman was left stunned after a deer that broke into her home needed to be shot and killed while she was hosting an animal protection fundraiser.
Linda Stefanish, who makes jewelry to raise money for a local animal rescue group, had six guests in her home on Sunday looking to spend some cash in support of the cause; but it was a different type of buck that crashed the party.
Stefanish was dismayed when a male deer burst through her front door.
Not sure what to do, she called the police, while her guests and three dogs took shelter in a room in the back of the house.
“I don’t think it’s something I want to remember,” said Stefanish.
The frightened deer broke its leg as it scrambled around the home looking for an escape, leaving holes in walls, damaging hardwood floors, and leaving blood marks across furniture and carpets.
“Everyone says it’s crazy,” Stefanish told WKBN. “They never heard anything like it before.”
Once officers arrived they tried to restrain the injured animal, which resulted in one officer being kicked.
“They knew there was no way this deer was going to survive,” she said. “I felt bad it had to suffer as long as it did.”
Authorities eventually shot and killed the deer, saying it was the only way they would be able to remove the animal from the home.
Despite the tragic end to the wild situation, Stefanish acknowledged the absurdity of the incident.
“It’s just kind of ironic that here we are trying to save animals, and we’re having deer shot in our foyer,” said Stefanish.
Stefanish is waiting to hear if her insurance company will cover any of the damage, which may even be considered a biohazard.
