Gamer Uses Photoshop to Make Mass Effect: Andromeda Characters Look Stunning

There’s no question that Mass Effect: Andromeda‘s character models look a little off. Ever since early footage of the game began to emerge online, players have been poking fun at the ugly facial animations that certain characters appear to exhibit. Now, one talented gamer has used a little bit of Photoshop magic to show BioWare just how the characters should have looked, had a little more time been spend making the cast look beautiful.

The female Ryder arguably received the majority of the criticism when it came to animation. She doesn’t look too bad, all things considered, but when players recognize that the Mass Effect: Andromeda character is modeled after the stunning Jayde Rossi, it’s clear that there is a bit of an issue.

In the image above, we see a before and after Photoshop shot of Ryder, where huge improvements have been made to the facial model. Ryder’s face looks less swollen and her eyes a little less glassy. The hair is also adjusted slightly, making it look slightly more glossy and realistic. Each tweak is subtle on its own, but they all come together to make a big difference to the overall appearance of the character.

A second image that has emerged online shows another talented individual taking a crack at making the game’s Asari companion Peebee look a little more feminine. It certainly does its job well, though we can’t help but think that the alien companion begins to look a little too generic, despite her new-found beauty. This image appears to be completely redrawn, rather than Photoshopped, so the changes are quite substantial.

Of course, it’s one thing being able to change a character’s appearance in a still image and another thing entirely being able to create and animate a 3D model while continuing to make them look beautiful. At this point, a certain degree of focus on animation is expected in modern AAA games however, and it seems that BioWare may have made the mistake of relying on outsourcing when it came to making the Andromeda faces.
