Marvel: Avengers Alliance shutting down on all platforms, Disney focusing on other experiences

A whole lot of Facebook gamers are pretty upset right about now. In a relatively baffling decision from Disney, both Marvel: Avengers Alliance and Marvel: Avengers Alliance 2 are going to be completely shut down on all platforms on September 30th. Effective immediately, If you don’t already have the games, you won’t be able to download them on the mobile store – although Avengers Alliance 2 is still available to download on the PC Windows Store.

Here’s Disney’s statement regarding the closing (via Windows Central):

Today we are announcing the shutdown of Marvel: Avengers Alliance and Marvel: Avengers Alliance 2 on all platforms, including the App Store®, Google Play™, Amazon Appstore, Windows Phone Store, and Facebook. Beginning today, we are no longer accepting new purchases or downloads, but the games will be available to play until September 30, 2016.

By mobile/Facebook game standards, Marvel: Avengers Alliance and its sequel were well-liked and had a pretty sizeable following, standing out as a bastion of quality amidst a sea of shovelware. Disney’s closing of the app marks the second time that it shut down a game on its fans, with Disney Infinity (which is closing down on the same day as M:AA, coincidentally) being prematurely discontinued because it couldn’t quite keep up with its competitor, Skylanders.

It’s safe to say that this is now officially indicative of a trend, and one that could have a serious effect on Disney in the near future. For fans of Marvel: Avengers Alliance and its sequel, it’s hard to imagine that Disney can be seen as a trustworthy publisher for games any longer. Since Disney’s statement excusing themselves for the closing is relatively vague, it’s hard to say if they intend to be bringing out a new mobile project soon, or just intend to sweep this under the rug and get on with other projects. In the coming months, we’ll be keeping an eye on Disney to see if they release anything new on the mobile market.
