In efforts to increase the adoption of IPv6 in the country, the Nigeria Internet Registration Agency (NiRA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC) and its Academy in Kenya, to develop and certify skills in Internet number resources management in Nigeria.
IPv6 is the most recent version of the Internet Protocol, which provides an identification and location system for computers on networks and routes traffic across the Internet
According to the President of NiRA, Rev. Sunday Folayan, who announced this in Lagos, the agency is also prepared to honour 22 outstanding clients at the forthcoming .ng awards. The MoU agreement creates access to IPv6 certification for Nigerian system and network engineers and provides the opportunity for the country to increase the number of internationally recognised and skilled IPv6 engineers, patterned after AFRINIC model.
Folayan said the training would be conducted at the NiRA Academy, using AFRINIC course wares and certified trainers for the certification programmes.
He further disclosed that the agreement between NiRA and the Kenya Network Information Centre (KeNIC), the mangers of the .ke Country Top Level Domain (ccTLD), specified the mutual rights and obligations of both parties.
This will foster a working relationship to enable accredited registrars under both registries to provide associated services for prospective applicants and registrants, who will undergo accreditation process under the respective registries.
The cooperation will give NIRA accredited registrars the opportunity to register domain names directly in the Kenyan registry; pay in their local currency and vice versa. This will boost the quantity of domain names registered in both registries and also have a positive impact on the domain name business in Africa.
Speaking at the commencement of nominations for the .ng awards, Folayan said the domain seeks to celebrate the achievements and innovation of Nigeria Internet initiatives.
According to him, the awards is a platform to showcase Nigerian businesses, individuals, charity, public and private sector organisations, which help to make the Internet a more secure, open accessible and rewarding experience for all.
Chairman of the award, Shina Badaru, further noted that all nominees must have following: outstanding online presence; the company, organisation or individual must have registered and is active online with .ng domain name(s); the domain name must have been registered for over six months; the website associated with the domain name must be active on the Internet.
