OLALA iDisk: External Storage For iPhone And iPad

One of the biggest regrets of iPhone and iPad owners is opting for Apple’s entry level models and finding themselves stuck with a measly 16GB of storage. Actually, it’s considerably less than that after you account for the operating system. With new iPhones capable of shooting 4K video, you only have half an hour or so of shooting before you run out of space.

Unlike competing phones and tablets such as Samsung’s Galaxy S7, you can’t supplement the built-in storage on Apple’s devices using a microSD card.

The iDisk from OLALA (not to be confused with Apple’s former online storage solution) aims to solve this problem. Not only that, but by offering both Lightning and USB 3.0 connectors, iDisk is designed to bring “sneaker-net” to your iPhone –acting as a thumb drive to transfer files between an iOS device and a Mac or Windows PC.

Attractively Built

Looking at the iDisk, it’s clear that OLALA didn’t cheap out on build quality. Visually, it looks like a full length, dual-width thumb drive with rounded edges. The body is made of metal in a finish that complements Apple’s colors and is quite attractive. My review unit was Space Gray, with Silver also offered. Storage capacity ranges from 32GB to 64GB. A sliding switch in the center of the iDisk controls whether the USB 3.0 connector or Lighting connector is extended.
Overall, it looks like a premium accessory and it’s Apple MFi certified.

It should be noted that there are several iDisk variants, including one with fixed USB and Lightning connectors and larger capacity options. My review unit was the ID100 version with 64GB of storage and a MSRP of $99.99 (although it sells online for under $50).
