Geoff Keighley just seems to be everywhere when it comes to gaming happenings. He’s the go-to personality for annual event The Game Awards, he has a show at E3, and he sometimes ends up trying to enthusiastically spice up actually dull interviewswhere we hear nothing substantial about Kojima’s game in the works. His latest exploit is an effort to bring the best of YouTube Gaming together in one live show for gamers to tune into weekly and hear the latest from the industry and culture. It’s called Live With YouTube Gaming:Geoff Keighley will host the show every Thursday night at 5PM PT/8PM ET on YouTube Gaming, so it’s free for anyone to watch. I will feature game trailers, world premieres, musical performances, and appearances from famous YouTube personalities such as Nadeshot, iJustine, MatPat, and iHasCupQuake, who have all already signed on. Since it will likely receive all the best promotion YouTube has to offer, expect more high-profile personalities and game devs eager to show off their best on the show.
Live with YouTube Gaming will easily be a must-watch for anyone wanting to keep up with the latest, assuming Keighley delivers. It does make me nervous for what sort of games he’ll bring to the show after what happened to No Man’s Sky. A tiny indie team being blown over by a hype they couldn’t deliver on had less than favorable results for their reputation and game’s legacy. While I’m all for promoting indie games, perhaps some better discretion should be used about how those games are discussed when brought to huge platforms like this show.
There’s also the chance it’s a boring flop for those looking for the latest in gaming news, and ends up as nothing more than cringey promotion for YouTube personalities. But that’s an unlikely worst case scenario.
