There’s nothing quite like being fully immersed in a game . What with the growing popularity of virtual reality , it was only a matter of time before a wearable was designed to engage another of your senses.
We just weren’t quite expecting this one.
Nosulus Rift , designed by Ubisoft, allows gamers to experience smells whilst playing the new South Park game. But there’s only one smell on offer: fart.
In the game you play the character of a new kid in town and your special ability is farting – or as Jason Schroeder Ubisoft senior producer delicately puts in, “the power of your ass”.
“The only way to really help people experience that strength is to really make sure that they can feel it,” notes Jason Schroeder.
“And that means getting really close. This time we wanted to come up with the most authentic, most immersive way for players to be able to experience the power of the new kid.”
The wearable device straps around your face and nose, releasing a fresh stench every time your character farts in the virtual game.
In the accompanying video, one user described how: “It was exactly like someone had farted in my face and I was like ‘Holy sh** is that real fart?'”
The team behind the synthetic stench claimed they “smelt more than a thousand farts” before landing upon the perfect formula for their “Fartgrance”.
Want to smell it for yourself? Ubisoft are demonstrating the Nosulus Rift at a number of game conventions and the device will go on sale when South Park: The Fractured But Whole is released on December 6 for Xbox One, PC and PS4.
“Start small, stink big!”
