Rihanna tops Dance Club Songs, Clams Casino leads Top Dance/Electronic Albums, and more.
Rihanna rules Dance Club Songs for a 26th time, as “Kiss It Better” nuzzles up to No. 1 on the Aug. 6-dated chart. Only Madonna, with 46 leaders in the chart’s nearly 40-year history, has notched more.
“Kiss It Better” is Rihanna’s third No. 1 in 2016 – no other act has logged more than one this year. She topped the April 23 list with “Work,” featuring Drake, and followed with two more frames on top (July 9 and 16) as the featured act on Calvin Harris’ “This Is What You Came For.”
“Kiss,” remixed by R3hab, Feenixpawl and Four Tet, among others, is one of two Rihanna songs concurrently in the top three, as it joins her own “Needed Me” at No. 3.
Rihanna is the first lead act to have two songs concurrently in the top three, and only the second overall to manage the feat. The first artist to do it was Kylie Minogue on the March 5, 2011-dated tally, with her own “Better Than Today” at No. 1, and her featured role on Taio Cruz’s “Higher” at No. 3.
Further, Rihanna has another song in the top 10 (“This Is What You Came For,” at No. 10), giving her three simultaneous tracks in the region for a second consecutive week. Rihanna herself was the last act to earn three concurrent top 10 hits, back on the March 5, 2011 list (“S&M” was No. 4 and “What’s My Name” was No. 10, while she was featured on David Guetta’s “Who’s That Chick” at No. 8).
‘Levels’ Debuts at No. 1: On Top Dance/Electronic Albums, producer Clams Casino (real name: Michael Volpe) debuts at No. 1 with his first album, 32 Levels (3,000 sold in the week ending July 21, according to Nielsen Music). The set’s deluxe version showcases Casino’s electronic production skills, providing instrumental versions of the album’s first 12 tracks. Also on Top Dance/Electronic Albums, Italian DJ/producer Benny Benassi notches his first top 10 with Danceaholic (No. 7, 1,000 sold). It’s Benassi’s fourth trip to the chart, dating to his first in 2008 with Rock’N’Rave. That set reached No. 11, as did his 2011 album, Electroman.
‘This Girl’ Gains: On Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, French DJ Kungs and Australian act Cookin’ On 3 Burners score their first top 10 each with “This Girl” (11-9). The Digital Gainer, “Girl” sold 7,000 digital units, up 58 percent. That’s also good for an 8-7 move on Dance/Electronic Digital Songs. Plus, the track is up on Dance/Mix Show Airplay (22-15) as it debuts on Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs (No. 22, 1.8 million U.S. streams, up 22 percent).
‘Ride’ Runs to Top 10 on Dance/Mix Show Chart: Twenty One Pilots cruises into the top 10 on Dance/Mix Show Airplay with “Ride” (12-9). Dance mixes by Jay Mac, among others, make the alt. rock track palatable for top 40 mix shows. It’s the second top 10 for the act, which reached No. 4 in February with “Stressed Out.”
