If recent poll numbers and school walkouts are anything to go by, many young people aren’t feeling so great about Donald Trump being the next U.S. president.
Now some students are expressing their political discontent with a new social media challenge that’s going viral this week. Called the #TrumpIsComing Challenge, the group stunt requires one person to yell “Trump is coming!” Then everyone else panics and runs.
The Trump challenge is a variation on the popular Andy’s Coming Challenge, in which everyone suddenly goes lifeless and limp like the toys in Toy Story. And it’s not to be confused with the #MannequinChallenge and #UNameItChallenge, which also are trending this week.
#TrumpIsComing seems to have gotten its start the day after the election, when 16-year-old Emi Chavez, from Azle, Texas, challenged his friends to demonstrate how they’d react to Trump showing up. Emi then uploaded the video to Twitter. The Internet immediately ran with it.
Although these vids are funny to watch, they do speak to a deeper issue: Young people are legitimately worried about the future.
“Everyone is scared by what Trump said about sending Mexicans back home — and all the other racist things, as well,” Emi, who is Mexican-American, said in a BBC interview about the viral challenge. “The whole idea was to have some fun, but Trump is a very scary guy to kids of our age. … So we were just thinking about how we would just run away from him if he came near.”
