Xiaomi kills the Redmi Note 5, to focus more on Redmi 6 Pro

Xiaomi’s Redmi Note series devices have always been the talk of the town for smartphone buyers, with thousands of people looking to grab a share of the handset within a few days of its launch. The Redmi Note 3 and Redmi Note 4 were extremely successful products, bringing Xiaomi to the forefront of the smartphone industry. Starting 2018, Xiaomi changed its strategy and brought two devices under the Redmi Note branding – the Note 5 and Note 5 Pro.

While the Note 5 Pro has gone on to become one of the bestsellers in its segment, the standard Note 5 couldn’t enjoy a similar success and eventually started challenging some of Xiaomi’s other offerings in the portfolio. As a result, Xiaomi has taken the decision to axe the Redmi Note 5 from their lineup.

The Redmi Note 5 has been selling alongside the Note 5 Pro for a while. The base version of the standard Note 5 with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage retailed for Rs 9,999 while the variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage sold around Rs 11,999. This was a no-bother for the handset until Xiaomi launched the Redmi Y2 in the same price bracket and later added the Redmi 6 Pro to that collection. The Redmi 6 Pro is essence is an improved version of the Redmi Note 5 with better dual rear camera setup and an edge-to-edge display with a notch.

Since consumers were essentially getting the newer model for a similar price, the Redmi Note 5 had veered away from popularity in recent times. Hence, it made sense for the company to pull the plug on the handset, eventually focusing on the Redmi 6 Pro and the Redmi Y2 in that segment or now.

The Redmi 6 Pro uses the same Snapdragon 625 chipset as the Redmi Note 5 and is kept alive by a similar 4000mAh battery. The Redmi Pro sports a 5.8-inch full HD+ display with an aspect ratio of 19:9 – thank to the notch on top. It is presently running on MIUI 10 based on Android 8.1 Oreo and is awaiting an update to Android Pie as of now. The Redmi 6 Pro is available in two variants – one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage costing Rs 10,999 and another with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage priced at Rs 12,999.
