More cryptic comments from the boss of Xbox suggest that the new Xbox hardware might be more substantial than previously thought.
Although the PlayStation 4K seems to be little more than open secret at this point, it’s actually Microsoft that first started talking about upgraded consoles. And now Xbox boss Phil Spencer has been at it again, and it’s still not really clearly what he’s getting at…
At a recent press event in the US, attended by GameSpot, Spencer stated, ‘I’m not a big fan of Xbox One and a half’.
‘If we’re going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers’, he said. ‘For us, our box is doing well. It performs, it’s reliable, the servers are doing well. If we’re going to go forward with anything, like I said, I want it to be a really substantial change for people – an upgrade.’
The central problem seems to be what exactly he considers the word ‘upgrade’ to mean; although he’s already said it doesn’t refer to manually updating a console with new components, like a PC.
We think he’s still talking about an Xbox One and a Half in all but name, simply with the implication that it’d be a lot more powerful and he’d call it an Xbox Two.
A completely new generation of console would, it seems, be named something else entirely.
That’s our interpretation anyway, but hopefully things will be made clearer at E3 in June.
